The Power of Setting Long-Term Goals
The Marshmallow Experiment.
The Marshmallow Experiment, conducted by psychologist Walter Mischel in the late 1960s and early 1970s, remains one of the most famous studies in psychology. In this intriguing experiment, young children were offered a choice: they could have one marshmallow immediately, or if they could wait for a short period (usually around 15 minutes), they would receive two marshmallows.
The results were fascinating. Some children were able to resist the temptation of the immediate reward and wait for the larger reward later, while others succumbed to the temptation and ate the marshmallow immediately.
So, what can we learn from the Marshmallow Experiment? Patience isn’t just a virtue; it’s a valuable skill that can pave the way for a brighter future. By learning to delay gratification, setting long-term goals, and staying focused on the bigger picture, we can achieve greater success and fulfilment in life.
I was that child who always chose the one marshmallow immediately. Patience wasn’t my forte; I wanted everything instantly. But looking back, if someone had taught me the importance of long-term goals and the rewards of patience in that moment, I might have been more successful and achieved my goals faster today.
Often, we wait for the “right time” or the perfect moment, but time doesn’t wait—it only passes. Now, I prioritize breaking down my long-term goals into actionable steps. For example, if you want to learn a new language, you can dedicate just 20 minutes each day to exercises, watching YouTube videos, or using language learning apps like Duolingo. In just one year, you’ll be speaking a new language, acquiring a valuable skill, and adding more value to yourself. Similarly, if you read one hour of a book about marketing every day, you’ll become an expert in this field.
Long-term goals provide clarity, helping you focus your efforts and track your progress effectively. While it’s crucial to set ambitious long-term goals, remaining flexible and adaptable is equally essential. Be open to adjusting your goals and strategies as needed, based on changes in your circumstances or priorities. This flexibility allows you to stay on course toward your overarching objectives while navigating the twists and turns of life’s journey.
