Do You Truly Know How to Love Yourself?
A Manual of Self-Love
Do you know how to love yourself? A friend of mine, Louise, an incredible woman, would reply to me, ‘That’s a good question.’ I really love that expression, and it’s kinda stuck with me and it sparked the idea to share with you the ‘That’s a Good Question’ series!
On a beautiful morning stroll along the stunning shores of Sicily, I found myself in the company of a dear friend, Ann. As we walked, she shared with me the pain of her recent breakup, her words laced with self-doubt and negativity.
I couldn’t help but wonder why she spoke about herself in such a disparaging manner. So, I gently asked her, “Why do you use self-negative talk?”
Surprisingly, she turned the question back on me, asking, “But how do I love myself?” It was a poignant moment, one that made me realize how often we hear the command to love oneself without any guidance on how to actually do it.
It’s a question that often goes unanswered. We hear it all the time: ‘Love yourself.’ But rarely do we get a manual on how to actually do it. When my friend asked me how, I was stumped. But then it hit me. Self-love isn’t just about looking in the mirror and saying ‘I love you.’ It’s about looking inside and recognizing our worth. It’s about appreciating the kindness in our hearts, the smiles we share, and the way we treat others.
So, start by listening to yourself. Pay attention to what you’re saying about yourself. Make a decision to respect yourself and put an end to self-negative talk. If there’s something you don’t like about yourself, instead of dwelling on it, think about how you can improve. Remember, our bodies may change, but our essence remains. So, let’s not forget the most important relationship we’ll ever have: the one with ourselves.
Ann became aware of how she spoke about herself and viewed herself, everything changed. As she began to love herself, her life transformed. Her heart became full, and she attracted the love of her life – they’ve been living happily together for three years now.
Self-love isn’t about being selfish; it’s about filling up your own cup so you can pour into others. So, my friend, let’s make a pact: from here on out, let’s choose love – for ourselves, for each other, and for this beautiful journey called life.
